Post Captain Letter September 2019

Dear Members of The North American Station,

The NAS is enjoying a very active 2019!

In reverse chronological order:

Looking forward to the Annual Dinner Dance, Friday, 6 December, NYYC – We expect many  Home Club guests and possibly a sell-out and waiting list. Likely overseas guests include KSSS  Commodore Patrik (and Katja) Salén; KSSS board member Robert (and Åse) Hansson; KSSS members Hjalmar and Britt-Marie Schibbye, Carl and Eva Urban and children, Per and  Anne-Charlotte Säve and Hans and Eva Drakenberg; KDY Commodore Carl Erik Kjærsgaard  (and his wife, Annegrete Warrer) and Past Commodore Lars (and Kirsten) Ive; GKSS  Commodore Robert Casselbrant (and his daughter); KNS Rear Commodore Nils (and Marie)  Klippenberg; NJK Commodore Mats (and Catarina) Welín; and NAS members Peter (and Lena) Lyth. David Tunick is again Dinner Chair – thank you, David! Invitations will go out next  month.

BREAKING NEWS! Close NAS friends Hans Drakenberg and Eva Holmsten are now Mr. and  Mrs. Drakenberg!

Sailing aboard VEMA III – KNS Commodore KC Agerup very kindly invited The NAS aboard  his 12 meter, VEMA III, earlier this month. What a fabulous invitation and day! Thank you, KC!

Godshalk and Agerup.

Commodores’ Meeting – We met in Marstrand in August aboard the yacht owned by GKSS  Commodore Robert Casselbrant. Thank you, Robert, for hosting 5C, TAR and the Commodores’  Meeting!

KDY Commodore Carl Erik

Kjærsgaard, KNS Rear Commodore

Nils Klippenberg, KSSS Commodore

Patrik Salén, GKSS Commodore Robert

Casselbrant, NAS PC Godshalk, NJK

Commodore Mats Welín.

Each Home Club was represented by its commodore (except that KNS Commodore KC Agerup  was aboard his 12 meter, VEMA III, in Newport, and was represented by Rear Commodore Nils  Klippenberg). We re-confirmed that The NAS will host 5C and TAR next year (dates TBD) and

also that we will plan the next NAS Cruise in the US in 2022. Chace Anderson has agreed to  chair the cruise – thank you, Chace! The Home Clubs remain very enthusiastic about The NAS.

Five Club – GKSS held 5C in Marstrand in early August. Each club – including The NAS, thank  you, Angelica! - fielded a team. The elegant 5C trophy was taken home by GKSS.

The Atlantic Round – GKSS also hosted TAR later in August in the spectacular Marstrand  “sailing amphitheater.” Again, each club fielded a team. The Swope Trophy (everyone’s favorite  event) and Atlantic Round Trophy went to host club, GKSS.

KSSS very graciously has provided a replacement for The   Atlantic Round Trophy, misplaced years ago. GKSS has   offered to replace the misplaced The Adams Cup, originally   established by GKSS, possibly with a modified criterion.

The 2019 12 Metre Worlds were held in Newport. Four Scandinavian boats – owned or  chartered - including Vema, owned by KNS Commodore Karl-Christian Agerup, and Blue  Marlin, owned by a member of NJK, participated. The NAS assisted where possible and  provided unlimited moral support.

Junior Exchange – While we had only two exchanges this year, they were each unqualified  successes according to the Juniors and their Host Families: the KSSS Junior on Exchange to  Camden Yacht Club has been invited to return next year to a full time instructor position; the

NJK Host Family and Commodore told me that they were very happy with their American  Exchange Junior. Thank you, Doug and Dale, Jennifer, Henrik, Mats, Susan and others who  helped with these successful Exchanges! I am encouraged by these successes, Susan Gardner’s  commitment to help again and the Home Clubs’ strong enthusiasm.

Golden Eye cruising in Scandinavia –

We again had a full summer, starting in Saltsjöbaden in May;   participating in the 2019 Cruise; then a leisurely cruise south   along Sweden’s east coast, north in The Sound to Helsingør,   south to the German coast and back to Svendborg on Fyn in   Denmark for the winter. Next summer will likely see her leave   Scandinavia, bound south.

2019 Stockholm Archipelago Cruise – Forty-four members of The NAS and their guests and  14 members of Founding Club KSSS (including Commodore Salén and several board members,  each of whom was actively involved in planning the Cruise) and their guests, were joined by  members of The CCA and their guests for a 16-day cruise in the archipelago that David and I co chaired with Nick as treasurer and a lot of help from many others. Highlights included dinners at  Vasa Museum – attended by KSSS Commodore (and Katja) Salén and Past Vice Commodore  Hans (and Eva) Drakenberg, NJK Commodore (and Catarina) Welín, NAS Past Post Captain  Johann (and Ninoue) Kahm, KDY Commodore Carl Erik Kjærsgaard, KNS Past Commodore  Ragnar Klevaas (and his granddaughter, Pauline Jahren), NAS Governor Henrik (and Marina)  Roos, GKSS Past Commodore Per (and Karin) Settergren, 2017 Cruise host Lars Spongberg  (and Ulla Osterman) and NAS member Fredrik Wallenberg – and also at Sandham and  Saltsjöbaden. The Cruise was applauded as a success and also yielded a surplus to The NAS.

Spring Meeting and Clambake – The Governors met before the Spring Meeting of members:

Richard West was appointed Secretary – thank you, Richard!; six members were elected or  reinstated* - thank you, Nick! - and it was noted that our Treasurer had persuaded nine members  to convert to “couples” status – thank you, Jennifer! Minutes of the Spring Meeting are on the  website. Thanks again to David Tunick’s hospitality, NAS and CCA members enjoyed another  wonderful clambake – thank you, David!

Dear Ernest

I write to you on behalf of RNYC, hence it is great honour for me to announce that the AGM  the 14th of march 2019 unanimous decided to have you as a new “invited member” of RNYC.

The motivation is the work you have done in keeping the 5club and TAR alive.

Next time you be around we will have the official handshake and nonetheless the pin which  follows the honour. However you are now lifetime member of the club.

Welcome anyway

Royal Norwegian Yacht Club

Looking ahead to 2020:

We will host both TAR and Five Club Regatta in 2020 at considerable expense to The NAS.  Please consider a generous donation to The Atlantic Round, Inc. – you may do this easily on  our website.

Junior Exchange continues to be under-resourced although Susan Gardner, a member of  Stamford YC and recent host family, and our own Angelica Barrows have offered to help. We  continue to need the help of all members. I continue to request assistance from members on  this program. You can easily help by contacting the junior sailing leader at your local yacht  club, and/or by putting an article like the draft attached in your club’s newsletter and referring  interested Juniors and Host Families to me or my successor as chair of Junior Exchange.

2020 will be an exciting year for The NAS: our 75th anniversary, TAR and 5C. I hope that many  of you will join us in making 2020 memorable!

Thank all of you who are contributing to progress at The North American Station! I look forward to seeing many of you at our Annual Meeting and Dinner on December 6!

And remember:

“The Gods do not deduct from man’s allotted span those hours spent in sailing.” Sincerely,

Ernie Godshalk, Post Captain
