The Atlantic Round Trophy shall be a perpetual trophy to be awarded to the winning yacht in races conducted by the Home Clubs or this station as part of The Atlantic Round Regatta. The winning yacht shall be determined by the race committee of the host club.
This trophy was donated by past Post Captain Paul Adams. He tells the story of how he came in possession of the tall vase which is the trophy: The vase was a wedding present to his wife’s mother in the late 1890s. There is an old engraving (“M.I.B.”) on the back of the vase, standing for “Myrtle Ives Barnes.” Paul said that when the vase was handed to him by the heirs of Mrs. Barnes, it was black with tarnish and filled with dents. Paul had the vase repaired, cleaned, and polished, and it turned out to be so beautiful that he dared not show it to the heirs for fear they might want it back!
The teak base was designed and constructed by Henry C. Reid & Sons, Jewelers, in Fairfield, Connecticut. The silver plaque is for engraving the name of the winning yacht club with crew names. It is planned that additional plaques for engraving the winners may be made for the remaining three sides of the base.
Like most perpetual trophies, this one may be kept by the yacht club which wins it three times, in which case the trophy will be retired. Louise Adams suggested that flowers of the national colors of the winning club be in the vase at the time of presentation. In 2018 KSSS retired the original trophy so they donated a new one.
