Post Captain’s letter October 5, 2022

Dear Members,

I hope you have had a good summer with plenty of time on the water.  Phyllis and I spent most of the summer going in and out of Narragansett Bay, first for the Newport Bermuda Race, then The Atlantic Round and Five Club Regatta in Newport, and lastly for the CCA 100th Anniversary, also in Newport.  I'm sure all the east coasters will agree that July and August were hot!

Now for some NAS business:

  • The Christmas Dinner Dance will be held at the New York Yacht Club, New York City on December 2, 2022.  Invitations with a link to register will go out within the next week or so.
  • The NAS hosted The Atlantic Round and the Five Club Regatta in Newport from July 8-12.  All five Home Clubs participated and all five were led by their respective commodores. The Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS) took home the winner's trophy in The Atlantic Round and your NAS team, captained by Palmer Sparkman, made a respectable finish near the middle of the pack. In the Five Club Regatta, the NAS Team came in first place.  Congratulations to our junior sailors for our best ever showing

  • Hosting TAR and the Five Club was a completely new experience for me.  I am very grateful to Angelica Almlid Barrows, Dave Brown, Allan Heyward and Palmer Sparkman for their help.  Thanks also to the New York Yacht Club Race Committee, which provided both the people and the equipment to run the races.
  • Your Cruise Committee is hard at work nailing down details for the 2023 New England Cruise beginning in Newport on July 1st.  Please look for a message from the Cruise Committee within the next week or two.
  • Our intrepid Past Post Captain, David Tunick, arrived home in Stamford, CT on August 3rd after departing A Coruña, Spain single-handed nearly two months earlier.  David had myriad mechanical problems, making the voyage perhaps more of an adventure than he had bargained for.  He chronicled the trip with a steady stream of emails, which make interesting reading.  Click here to read them.

  •  The NAS website https://northamericanstation.org/ requires regular attention to keep it up to date.  I have been trying, without much success, to do it myself.  If there are any members out there who would like to excercise your creativity and become more invoived with the day to day activities of the NAS, please contact me.
  • A couple of weeks ago, I sent letters via USPS to a short list of members who have not paid their dues for 2022.  If you received one of those letters and you haven't already done so, please pay your dues.
  • Secretary Henrik Roos and I are working on the next edition of the NAS Directory.  On September 9th, I sent individual messages to every member showing your entry as it will appear in the next directory.  If you have already replied with "OK" or "Will correct"; thank you.  If you didn't receive the message or have lost it, search your email for [email protected] and please reply soon.
  • Finally, thank you to all the volunteers who work hard to keep the NAS a vibrant organization.  Without your help we couldn't continue.

Sincerely,

Nick Orem, Post Captain
